Menelauksen surkea loppu. Antiokus Eupator ryhtyy onnistumattomaan sotaretkeen juutalaisia vastaan ja tekee sitten heidän kanssansa rauhan.
1Vuonna 149 saapui Juudaalle ja hänen miehillensä sellainen tieto, että Antiokus Eupator oli tulossa Juudeaa vastaan suurin joukoin, 2ja hänen kanssansa hänen holhoojansa Lysias, joka myös oli valtionhoitaja. Heillä oli kummallakin kreikkalainen sotajoukko, johon kuului satakymmenentuhatta jalkasoturia, viisituhatta kolmesataa ratsumiestä, kaksikymmentä kaksi norsua ja kolmesataa viikatevaunua. 3Heihin liittyi myöskin Menelaus, joka kovasti teeskennellen yllytti Antiokusta, ei isänmaan menestyksen tähden, vaan koska hän toivoi, että hänet jälleen asetettaisiin valtaan. 4Mutta kuningasten kuningas herätti Antiokuksen vihan tuota konnaa vastaan; ja kun Lysias osoitti, että juuri hän oli aiheuttanut kaikki onnettomuudet, käski kuningas viedä hänet Bereaan ja surmata hänet siten, kuin siinä paikassa on tapa. 5Siinä paikassa on nimittäin viisikymmentä kyynärää korkea torni, joka on täynnä tuhkaa. Siinä on pyöritettävä laite, joka kaikilta tahoilta jyrkästi viettää tuhkaan. 6Sinne jokainen, joka on syypää temppelinryöstöön taikka on tehnyt jonkin muun erittäin raskaan rikoksen, syöstään tuhoutumaan. 7Sellainen kuolema tuli tuon jumalattoman Menelauksen osaksi, eikä hän edes saanut hautaansa maahan. 8Ja se oli aivan oikein. Sillä koska hän oli tehnyt niin monta syntiä alttaria vastaan, jonka tuli oli pyhä ja samoin sen tuhka, niin hän sai surmansa tuhassa. 9Mutta kuningas saapui kovin julmistuneena, ja hänen aikomuksensa oli antaa juutalaisten kokea kaikkein pahinta, mitä hänen isänsä aikana oli heille tapahtunut. 10Kun Juudas sai tästä tiedon, kehoitti hän kansaa huutamaan yötä päivää avuksi Herraa, että hän nyt, jos milloinkaan auttaisi heitä, 11joilta aiottiin riistää laki ja isänmaa ja pyhä temppeli, ja ettei hän sallisi kansan, joka nyt oli saanut vähän aikaa hengähtää, joutua häijyjen pakanain käsiin. 12Ja kun kaikki yhtenä miehenä olivat tehneet niin ja rukoilleet armollista Herraa itkien ja paastoten ja maassa maaten yhtä mittaa kolme päivää, rohkaisi Juudas heitä ja käski heidän olla valmiina. 13Kun hän sitten oli pitänyt yksityisen neuvottelun vanhinten kanssa, päätti hän lähteä liikkeelle ja saattaa asian Jumalan avulla ratkaisuun, ennenkuin kuninkaan sotajoukko hyökkäisi Juudeaa vastaan ja saisi kaupungin valtaansa. 14Jätettyänsä näin ratkaisun hänen huomaansa, joka on maailman Luoja, ja kehoitettuansa väkeään taistelemaan urhoollisesti kuolemaan saakka lain, temppelin, kaupungin, isänmaan ja yhteiskunnan puolesta, hän pystytti leirinsä Moodeinin läheisyyteen. 15Ja annettuaan väellensä tämän tunnussanan: Jumala on voitto, hän hyökkäsi yöllä mukanansa valittu joukko parhaimpia nuoria miehiä kuninkaan päämajaan ja tuhosi leirin, noin kaksituhatta miestä. Samalla hän surmasi parhaan norsun sekä ne, jotka olivat tornissa sen selässä. 16Ja lopuksi he täyttivät leirin pelolla ja kauhulla ja lähtivät voittajina pois 17vasta päivän koittaessa. Mutta tämä tapahtui siitä syystä, että Herran varjelus oli hänen apunansa. 18Mutta kun kuningas oli saanut maistaa juutalaisten rohkeutta, koetti hän saada viekkaudella haltuunsa varustetut paikat. 19Niin hän hyökkäsi Beetsuuria, vahvaa juutalaisten linnoitusta, vastaan; hänet lyötiin takaisin, hän teki uuden rynnäkön ja kärsi taas tappion. 20Juudas lähetti nimittäin linnoituksessa oleville, mitä he tarvitsivat. 21Rodokos, eräs mies juutalaisten sotajoukosta, ilmaisi viholliselle salaisuuksia: hänet haettiin esiin, otettiin kiinni ja teljettiin vankilaan. 22Kuningas neuvotteli toistamiseen Beetsuurin väen kanssa, tarjosi rauhaa ja sai sen. Sitten hän lähti pois 23ja hyökkäsi Juudaan ja hänen väkensä kimppuun, mutta joutui tappiolle. Niin hän sai kuulla, että Filippus, joka oli jätetty valtionhoitajaksi, oli tehnyt kapinan Antiokiassa. Tästä hän peljästyi niin, että ryhtyi neuvottelemaan juutalaisten kanssa, taipui ja valalla vahvisti kaikki kohtuulliset ehdot. Hän teki sopimuksen, ja toimitti uhrin, kunnioitti temppeliä ja osoitti suopeutta pyhälle paikalle. 24Hän otti myös Makkabilaisen ystävällisesti vastaan ja jätti Hegemonideen käskynhaltijaksi Ptolemaiksesta gerreniläisten alueelle saakka. 25Sitten hän tuli Ptolemaikseen. Mutta Ptolemaiksen asukkaat olivat pahoillaan sopimusten johdosta, sillä he pelkäsivät juutalaisia, ja tahtoivat saada määräykset kumotuksi. 26Silloin Lysias astui puhujalavalle ja puolusti sopimusta parhaansa mukaan, vakuutti, rauhoitti ja sai heidät myötämielisiksi. Sitten hän palasi takaisin Antiokiaan. Näin päättyi kuninkaan sotaretki ja paluu siltä.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
