Bileam profeteert opnieuw
1Bileam begreep nu wel dat de Here van plan was Israël te zegenen en dus liet hij het uit zijn hoofd om gebruik te maken van waarzeggerij zoals hij daarvoor vaak had gedaan. Maar hij keek over de woestijn en liet zijn blik rusten op het kamp van Israël, 2dat zich over de vlakte uitstrekte, verdeeld in stammen. en hij sprak de volgende profetie uit: ‘Zo spreekt Bileam, de zoon van Beor, zo spreekt de man met het geopende oog. Ik heb geluisterd naar het Woord van God, ik heb gezien wat de Almachtige mij toonde. Ik viel voor Hem neer en mijn ogen gingen open. O, de vreugde die Israël wacht, de vreugde in de woningen van Jakob. Zij liggen voor mij als groene valleien, als vruchtbare tuinen aan een rivier, als aloëʼs door de Here Zelf geplant, als ceders die aan het water staan. Zij zullen worden gezegend met een overvloed van water en op vele plaatsen wonen. Hun koning zal machtiger zijn dan Agag, hun koninkrijk zal worden verhoogd. God bracht hen uit Egypte. Israël is sterk als een wilde os en zal vijandige volken verslinden. Hij zal hun botten breken en hen met pijlen doorboren. Israël slaapt als een leeuw en een leeuwin, wie zal zijn rust durven verstoren? Gezegend is ieder die u zegent, Israël, vervloekt zijn zij die u vervloeken.’ 10Koning Balak werd nu razend. Hij sloeg zijn handen ineen en schreeuwde: ‘Ik heb u hier geroepen om mijn vijanden te vervloeken, maar in plaats daarvan zegent u ze driemaal! 11Verdwijn! Ga terug naar uw woonplaats! Ik had u rijk willen belonen, maar de Here heeft u het loon niet gegund!’ 12Bileam antwoordde de koning: ‘Heb ik uw boodschappers niet gezegd dat, 13zelfs als u mij een paleis vol goud en zilver zou geven, ik de woorden van de Here niet kon overtreden? Dat ik geen woord uit mijzelf kan zeggen? Ik heb gezegd dat ik alleen zou zeggen wat de Here zegt! 14Ja, ik zal nu naar mijn eigen mensen terugkeren. En Bileam sprak opnieuw een profetie uit: ‘Bileam, de zoon van Beor, spreekt, de man met het geopende oog. Hij hoort de woorden van God en kent de wetenschap van de Allerhoogste. Hij ziet wat de Almachtige hem heeft getoond, hij viel voor Hem neer en zijn ogen gingen open: ik zie hem, maar niet nu, ik kijk naar hem, maar niet van dichtbij, er stijgt een ster op uit Jakob en een scepter rijst op uit Israël. Deze heerser van Israël zal Moabs grenzen vernielen en de kinderen van Set vernietigen. Israël zal Edom en Seïr veroveren, hij zal zijn vijanden overwinnen. Toen wendde hij zich tot de Kenieten en zei: ‘U hebt stevige woningen, uw huis is op de rotsen gebouwd. Bileam besloot zijn profetische woorden met: ‘Och, wie zal blijven leven als God dit doet? Maar er zullen schepen van de kust van Cyprus komen en zij zullen Eber en Assur in het nauw brengen. Maar ook zij zullen ten onder gaan.’ 25Na deze woorden keerden Bileam en Balak terug naar hun woonplaatsen.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
