De boodschap van Bileam

Toen zei Bileam tegen de koning: ‘Blijf hier bij uw brandoffer staan, dan zal ik kijken of de Here mij wil ontmoeten. Ik zal u vertellen wat Hij tegen mij zegt.’ Toen klom hij een kale heuvel op en God ontmoette hem daar. Bileam zei tegen Hem: ‘Ik heb zeven altaren laten bouwen en op elk altaar een jonge stier en een ram geofferd.’ 5Toen gaf de Here Bileam een boodschap voor koning Balak. 6Toen Bileam terugkwam, stond de koning naast de brandoffers. Dit was Bileams boodschap: ‘Koning Balak van Moab heeft mij uit het land Aram, uit de bergen in het oosten, gehaald. “Kom,” zei hij, “vervloek Jakob voor mij! Verwens Israël.” Maar hoe kan ik vervloeken wat God niet heeft vervloekt? Hoe kan ik een volk verwensen dat niet door de Here verwenst is? Ik kijk naar hen vanaf de rotsen, vanaf de heuvels overzie ik hen. Zij leven apart van andere volken en willen dat zo houden. Zij zijn zo talrijk als het stof, hun aantal is ontelbaar. Kon ik maar zo oprecht sterven als zij, was mijn einde maar gelijk aan hun einde!’ 11‘Wat hebt u nu gedaan?’ riep koning Balak vertwijfeld. ‘Ik heb u gezegd mijn vijanden te vervloeken en nu hebt u ze gezegend!’ 12Maar Bileam antwoordde: ‘Kan ik iets anders zeggen dan wat de Here mij opdraagt?’ 13Toen zei Balak tegen hem: ‘Kom mee naar een andere plek, daar kunt u het hele volk Israël overzien. Hier ziet u maar een gedeelte. Vervloek die Israëlieten dan vanaf die plek!’ 14Balak nam Bileam mee naar het veld van Sofim, op de top van de berg Pisga en bouwde daar zeven altaren. Op elk altaar offerde hij opnieuw een jonge stier en een ram. 15Toen zei Bileam tegen de koning: ‘Blijf hier bij uw brandoffer staan, dan zal ik de Here om raad vragen.’ 16En de Here ontmoette Bileam en vertelde hem wat hij moest zeggen. 17Zo keerde hij terug naar de plaats waar de koning en de andere vorsten van Moab naast hun brandoffers stonden. ‘Wat heeft de Here gezegd?’ vroeg de koning nieuwsgierig. 18 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 4.Mos. 23:24.

Bileam antwoordde: ‘Sta op, Balak en luister! Luister naar mij, zoon van Sippor. God is geen man, dat Hij zou liegen, Hij verandert niet van gedachten zoals mensen doen. Heeft Hij ooit iets beloofd zonder zijn belofte na te komen? Kijk! Ik heb bevel gekregen hen te zegenen, want God heeft hen gezegend en daar kan ik niets aan veranderen! Hij ziet geen ongerechtigheid in Jakob. Hij rekent Israël haar zonde niet aan. De Here, hun God, is met hen, Hij is hun Koning! God heeft hen uit Egypte geleid, Israël is zo sterk als een wilde os! Toverij doet Jakob niets en waarzeggerij heeft geen vat op Israël. Nu zal van Israël worden gezegd: “Wat een wonderen heeft God voor hen gedaan!” Dit volk staat op als een leeuw en zal pas gaan liggen als het de buit heeft gegeten en het bloed van de verslagenen heeft gedronken!’ 25‘Als u het volk niet wilt vervloeken, goed. Maar zegen het dan in elk geval niet!’ riep de koning naar Bileam. 26Maar Bileam antwoordde: ‘Ik heb u toch gezegd dat ik moet zeggen wat de Here mij opdraagt?’ 27Toen zei de koning tegen Bileam: ‘Ik zal u naar een andere plek brengen. Misschien vindt God het goed dat u het volk vanaf dat punt vervloekt.’ 28Zo nam koning Balak Bileam mee naar de top van de berg Peor, vanwaar zij over de woestijn uitkeken. 29Bileam zei de koning opnieuw zeven altaren te bouwen en zeven jonge stieren en rammen klaar te maken als offers. 30De koning deed wat Bileam had gezegd en offerde op elk altaar een jonge stier en een ram.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
