Vrouwen voor de stam van Benjamin
1De Israëlieten hadden in Mispa gezworen nooit een van hun dochters met een man van de stam Benjamin te laten trouwen. 2Toen zij in Betel waren samengekomen, zaten zij daar voor God en huilden bittere tranen. 3‘Waarom, Here, God van Israël,’ riepen zij, ‘heeft het zover kunnen komen dat nu een van onze stammen ontbreekt?’ 4De volgende ochtend stonden zij vroeg op, bouwden een altaar en brachten daarop brandoffers en vredeoffers. 5Zij zeiden tegen elkaar: ‘Was een van Israëls stammen niet aanwezig, toen wij die bijeenkomst voor de Here in Mispa hielden?’ Want toen hadden zij plechtig gezworen dat wie niet voor de Here in Mispa zou verschijnen, dit met de dood zou moeten bekopen. 6De Israëlieten hadden nu diep medelijden gekregen met hun broederstam Benjamin. Zij zeiden tegen elkaar: ‘Vandaag is een hele stam van Israël weggevaagd. 7Hoe moet dat groepje overlevenden vrouwen vinden, terwijl wij bij de Here hebben gezworen dat we hun onze dochters niet zouden geven?’ 8 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 21:9.

Daarom stuurde het volk twaalfduizend van de beste soldaten naar Jabes in Gilead om de bevolking te doden. Alle mannen, getrouwde vrouwen en kinderen werden met het zwaard gedood, maar alle jonge meisjes van huwbare leeftijd die nog maagd waren, werden gespaard. Het bleken er vierhonderd te zijn en zij werden naar de legerplaats in Silo in Kanaän gebracht. 13Toen stuurde Israël een delegatie naar het groepje overgebleven mannen van Benjamin op de rots Rimmon, om hun vrede aan te bieden. 14De Benjaminieten keerden daarop naar huis terug en kregen de meisjes uit Jabes die in leven waren gelaten. Toch waren het er nog niet genoeg. 15De Israëlieten hadden diep medelijden met de stam Benjamin, omdat de Here een wig had gedreven in Israëls stammen. 16‘Hoe kunnen wij aan vrouwen komen voor de anderen die nog geen vrouw hebben, nu alle vrouwen van de stam Benjamin dood zijn?’ vroegen de leiders van Israël zich af. 17‘In elk geval blijft het gebied Benjamin in bezit van de overgebleven groep. De stam van Benjamin moet in stand blijven. 18Maar we kunnen hun niet onze eigen dochters geven. Want we hebben gezworen dat wie dat doet, vervloekt zal zijn.’ 19Plotseling schoot iemand te binnen dat jaarlijks ter ere van de Here een feest werd gegeven in de velden bij Silo. Silo ligt tussen Lebona in het noorden en Betel in het zuiden en ten oosten van de weg die van Betel naar Sichem loopt. 20Zij zeiden tegen de mannen van Benjamin die nog geen vrouw hadden: ‘Verstop u in de wijngaarden bij Silo. 21Wanneer de meisjes van Silo uit de stad komen om te dansen, spring dan tevoorschijn, pak een meisje en neem haar mee naar uw gebied Benjamin en trouw met haar. 22En als hun vaders of broers bij ons komen protesteren, dan zullen wij zeggen: “Heb alstublieft begrip voor deze zaak en laat hen uw dochters houden. Want wij konden niet genoeg vrouwen voor hen vinden toen we Jabes in Gilead verwoestten. En u kon hun uw dochters niet geven, zonder schuld op u te laden wegens de eed.” ’ 23De mannen van Benjamin deden wat hun was gezegd, ze ontvoerden zoʼn tweehonderd dansende meisjes en trouwden met hen in hun eigen gebied. Daarna herbouwden zij de verwoeste steden en gingen er weer wonen. 24Ook het volk Israël keerde naar huis terug, iedereen ging naar de stam en familie waartoe hij behoorde. 25Er was in die tijd geen koning in Israël en iedereen deed maar wat hem het beste leek.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
