Judges 19
De bijvrouw uit Bethlehem
1In die tijd—er was toen nog geen koning in Israël—woonde een man van de stam Levi diep in de bergen van Efraïm. Hij had uit Bethlehem in Juda een vrouw als bijvrouw meegenomen. 2Zij werd hem echter ontrouw en liep van hem weg, terug naar het huis van haar vader in Bethlehem. Na vier maanden 3ging haar man, met een knecht en twee ezels, haar achterna om haar over te halen terug te komen. Toen hij bij het huis van haar vader was aangekomen, liet zij hem binnen. Haar vader was blij hem te zien en ontving hem vriendelijk. 4Hij drong er bij zijn schoonzoon op aan dat hij een tijdje zou blijven logeren en zo bleef hij daar drie dagen. Zij aten en dronken en hadden een gezellige tijd met elkaar. 5Op de vierde dag stonden zij vroeg op, klaar om te vertrekken. Maar de vader van de jonge vrouw zei: ‘Laten we eerst nog samen eten en dan kun je vertrekken.’ 6Terwijl zij samen zaten te eten en te drinken, vroeg de schoonvader hem: ‘Blijf nog een dag, het zal je goeddoen.’ 7Aanvankelijk weigerde de man, maar omdat zijn schoonvader bleef aandringen, stemde hij erin toe nog één nacht te blijven. 8De volgende ochtend stonden ze vroeg op, maar opnieuw overreedde zijn schoonvader hem nog wat te eten en tot de namiddag te blijven. En weldra zaten ze samen weer gezellig te eten. 9In de loop van de middag stond de man op om met zijn bijvrouw en knecht te vertrekken, maar zijn schoonvader zei: ‘Luister, de dag is al bijna om, het is zo avond. Blijf nog een nachtje hier, dan kunnen we het nog gezellig maken. Dan kun je morgenochtend vroeg opstaan en naar huis terugreizen.’ 10Maar deze keer liet de man zich niet overhalen en ze vertrokken. Voor het donker bereikte hij Jeruzalem (dat toen nog Jebus heette), samen met zijn span ezels en de vrouw. 11‘Zullen we daar overnachten?’ zei zijn knecht. 12 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 19:13.

‘Nee,’ zei zijn heer, ‘ik wil niet overnachten in een stad waar geen Israëlieten wonen. Laten we verder trekken naar Gibea of Rama en daar overnachten.’ 14Zo reisden zij verder. De zon ging juist onder toen zij in de buurt van Gibea kwamen, een stad van de stam Benjamin. 15Zij gingen de weg af naar deze stad om er de nacht door te brengen. Daar gingen ze op het stadsplein zitten, want niemand nodigde hen uit binnen te komen. 16Maar ʼs avonds kwam een oude man voorbij die van zijn werk op het veld naar huis terugkeerde. Hij was van oorsprong afkomstig uit de bergen van Efraïm en woonde nu in Gibea, hoewel die stad in het gebied van de stam Benjamin lag. 17Toen hij de reizigers op het plein zag zitten, vroeg hij waar ze vandaan kwamen en waar ze heen gingen. 18 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 19:19.

‘We komen uit Bethlehem in Juda en zijn op weg naar mijn huis, diep in de bergen van Efraïm. Bovendien doe ik dienst in het huis van de Here,’ antwoordde de man. ‘Maar niemand wil ons onderdak verlenen, hoewel wij stro en voer bij ons hebben voor onze ezels en voldoende brood en wijn voor onszelf.’ 20‘Mijn vrede zij met u, ik zal voor u zorgen,’ antwoordde de oude man. ‘U bent mijn gasten, want u moet niet hier op het plein blijven.’ 21Hij nam hen mee naar huis en gaf hun ezels voer, terwijl zij zich verfristen. Daarna aten zij samen. 22Maar terwijl het binnen gezellig was, omsingelden onverlaten het huis, bonsden op de deur en schreeuwden tegen de oude man dat hij de man die bij hem logeerde, naar buiten moest brengen, zodat zij geslachtsgemeenschap met hem konden hebben. 23De oude man ging naar buiten om met hen te praten. ‘Nee, beste mensen, doe toch alstublieft niet zoiets schandelijks met de man die bij mij te gast is,’ smeekte hij. 24‘Neem mijn dochter die nog maagd is, en de bijvrouw van deze man. Ik zal hen naar buiten brengen en u mag met hen doen wat u wilt, maar doe zoiets niet met deze man.’ 25Maar zij wilden niet naar hem luisteren. Daarop duwde de man zijn bijvrouw naar buiten en zij verkrachtten haar om beurten en waren de hele nacht met haar bezig. Ten slotte, bij het aanbreken van de morgen, lieten de mannen haar gaan. 26Zij viel neer voor de deur van het huis waar haar echtgenoot logeerde en bleef daar liggen tot het licht werd. 27Toen haar man ʼs morgens de deur opendeed om weer op weg te gaan, zag hij zijn vrouw daar voor de deur liggen, met haar handen op de drempel. 28‘Sta op,’ zei hij, ‘we vertrekken.’ Maar er kwam geen antwoord: ze was dood. Hij tilde haar op, legde haar op de ezel en nam haar mee naar huis. 29Thuisgekomen pakte hij een mes, sneed haar lichaam in twaalf stukken en stuurde naar elke stam van Israël één deel. 30Toen kwam het hele volk Israël in beroering. ‘Zoʼn vreselijke misdaad is er nog nooit gepleegd sinds Israël uit Egypte is vertrokken!’ zei iedereen. ‘We moeten overleggen wat ons te doen staat.’
