Simson en Delila
1Op een dag ging Simson naar de Filistijnse stad Gaza en bracht de nacht door bij een prostituee. 2Algauw wist iedereen dat Simson in de stad was. De hele nacht lagen bij de stadspoort mannen op de loer om Simson gevangen te nemen wanneer hij de stad zou uitgaan. Maar er gebeurde niets. ‘Morgenochtend,’ zeiden ze tegen elkaar, ‘zullen we hem weten te vinden en hem doden.’ 3Simson bleef tot middernacht bij die vrouw en ging toen naar de stadspoort. Hij rukte de deuren van de poort plus de beide deurposten met grendels en al los, legde ze op zijn schouders en droeg ze naar de top van de berg die ten oosten van Hebron ligt! 4Enige tijd later werd hij verliefd op Delila, een meisje dat in het dal Sorek woonde. 5De Filistijnse koningen kwamen bij haar en zeiden: ‘Probeer hem over te halen jou te vertellen waarin zijn kracht schuilt. Wij zullen hem dan overmeesteren en in de boeien slaan om hem zo te onderwerpen. Ieder van ons zal je hiervoor elfhonderd zilverstukken betalen.’ 6Toen smeekte Delila Simson haar zijn geheim te vertellen. ‘Vertel me toch alsjeblieft hoe het komt dat je zo sterk bent,’ vleide ze. ‘Wat is nodig om jou vast te binden en te overmeesteren?’ 7Simson zei: ‘Als ik zou worden vastgebonden met zeven verse pezen die nog niet zijn verdroogd, dan zou ik net zo machteloos en zwak zijn als ieder ander mens.’ 8Toen brachten de koningen Delila zeven verse pezen en terwijl Simson sliep, bond zij hem daarmee vast. 9Enkele mannen hadden zich in de aangrenzende kamer verborgen en zodra zij hem had vastgebonden, riep zij: ‘Simson! Daar komen de Filistijnen!’ Maar Simson brak de pezen als vlasdraadjes die te dicht bij het vuur komen, en het geheim van zijn kracht werd dus niet ontdekt. 10‘Je hebt me bedrogen,’ verweet Delila hem, ‘en leugens verteld. Zeg me toch alsjeblieft waarmee je kunt worden geboeid.’ 11Hij zei: ‘Als je mij stevig vastbindt met gloednieuwe, nog ongebruikte touwen, zal ik net zo machteloos zijn als ieder ander mens.’ 12En toen Simson sliep, pakte Delila een aantal nieuwe touwen en bond hem daarmee vast. Weer lagen mannen in de kamer ernaast op de loer. Delila riep: ‘Simson! De Filistijnen komen eraan!’ Maar hij brak de touwen alsof het draadjes waren. 13‘Je hebt me alweer bedrogen en me maar wat wijsgemaakt,’ klaagde Delila. ‘Zeg me nu eens écht hoe je kunt worden geboeid.’ ‘Nou,’ zei hij, ‘als je mijn zeven haarvlechten in je weefgetouw vastweeft…’ 14Dus toen hij sliep, deed ze dat en zette ze extra vast met een pin. Vervolgens begon ze te gillen: ‘Simson! Simson! Daar komen de Filistijnen!’ Simson werd wakker, trok de pin eruit en rukte zijn haar los uit het weefgetouw. 15‘Hoe kun je nu zeggen dat je van mij houdt, terwijl je me niet eens vertrouwt?’ verweet zij hem. ‘Je hebt me al drie keer bedrogen en nog steeds niet verteld waardoor je zo sterk bent.’ 16 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Dom. 16:17.

Ze bleef hem dag in, dag uit aan zijn hoofd zeuren, tot hij er zo verdrietig en moedeloos van werd dat hij haar zijn geheim vertelde. ‘Mijn haar is nooit geknipt,’ bekende hij, ‘want ik ben een Nazireeër van God vanaf mijn geboorte. Als mijn haar zou worden geknipt, zou ik mijn kracht verliezen en net zo machteloos zijn als ieder ander mens.’ 18Delila begreep dat hij haar nu eindelijk de waarheid had verteld, daarop liet ze de Filistijnse koningen komen. ‘Kom nog één keer,’ zei ze, ‘want nu heeft hij mij echt de waarheid verteld.’ Daarop kwamen de koningen en namen het beloofde geld mee. 19Toen liet zij hem met zijn hoofd op haar schoot inslapen en wenkte iemand om zijn zeven vlechten af te knippen. Zo slaagde zij erin hem machteloos te maken, want hij raakte zijn kracht kwijt. 20Plotseling riep ze: ‘Simson! De Filistijnen komen eraan!’ Simson werd wakker en dacht: ‘Ik doe hetzelfde als de vorige keren: ik ruk me los en ben vrij.’ Maar hij wist niet dat de Here hem had verlaten. 21Toen namen de Filistijnen hem gevangen, staken hem de ogen uit en brachten hem, geboeid met twee koperen kettingen, naar de stad Gaza. De Filistijnse koningen kwamen bijeen voor een groot feest om de gevangenneming van Simson te vieren. De feestgangers brachten offers aan hun god Dagon en aanbaden hem uitbundig. En toen de mensen Simson zagen, riepen zij: ‘Dagon heeft onze vijand Simson in onze macht gegeven, die verwoester van ons land, die moordenaar van velen uit ons volk!’ 25Toen ze halfdronken waren, schreeuwden ze: ‘Laat Simson komen, dan kunnen we lachen!’ Simson werd uit de gevangenis naar de tempel gehaald en neergezet tussen de twee zuilen die het tempeldak droegen. 26Hij zei tegen de jongen die hem begeleidde: ‘Laat mij maar los, ik wil graag even leunen tegen de zuilen.’ 27De tempel was afgeladen met mensen. Ook alle Filistijnse koningen waren aanwezig en op het platte dak zaten nog eens drieduizend mensen, die zich vermaakten met de aanblik van Simson. 28Toen bad Simson tot de Here: ‘Almachtige Here, denk aan mij, geef mij nog eenmaal kracht, o God, zodat ik wraak kan nemen op de Filistijnen voor het uitsteken van mijn ogen.’ 29Daarop greep hij de twee middelste zuilen waarop de tempel rustte. 30‘Laat mij met de Filistijnen sterven,’ bad hij. Toen duwde hij uit alle macht tegen de zuilen en de tempel stortte in, boven op de koningen en alle andere mensen. Zo doodde hij in zijn eigen dood méér mensen dan tijdens zijn hele leven. 31Later kwamen zijn broers en andere familieleden naar de plaats van de ramp om zijn lichaam naar huis te brengen. Ze begroeven hem bij zijn vader Manoach, tussen Sora en Estaol. Simson had Israël twintig jaar geleid.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
