Job 41
Hij schrikt niet terug voor snelstromende rivieren, zelfs niet als de machtige stroomversnellingen van de Jordaan op hem af zouden komen.1Niemand krijgt de kans hem in een ogenblik van onoplettendheid te overmeesteren door zijn ogen te bedekken of hem een ring door de neus te doen en hem daaraan weg te leiden.
2Kunt u het zeemonster Leviatan met een haak en een vislijn vangen? Of een lasso om zijn tong leggen?
3Kunt u hem met een touw door zijn neus in bedwang houden of zijn kaak met een pin doorboren?
4Zal hij u smeken om medelijden of u door vleiende woorden proberen om te praten?
5Zal hij zich erbij neerleggen dat u hem voor zijn verdere leven tot slaaf maakt?
6Kunt u hem net als een vogel in een huisdier veranderen en uw dochtertjes met hem laten spelen?
7Zullen de mannen die samen vissen hem aan de vishandelaren verkopen en zullen deze hem onder zich verdelen?
8Zal zijn huid worden doorboord met pijlen of kan iemand een harpoen in zijn kop planten?
9Als u hem met de hand wilt aanraken, zal het gevecht dat volgt u nog lang heugen en u zult dat geen tweede maal proberen.
10Nee, het is onmogelijk hem te vangen. Alleen al wanneer je naar hem kijkt, deins je terug.’

12‘Er is niemand die het waagt hem op te hitsen, laat staan dat er iemand is die wil proberen hem te overwinnen. En als niemand tegen hém is opgewassen,13zou er dan wel iemand bestaan die het tegen Mij kan opnemen? Ik ben niemand iets schuldig. Alles onder de hemelen is van Mij.
14Ik mag niet vergeten de geweldige kracht van zijn ledematen en zijn elegante lichaamsbouw te noemen.

De overlappende schubben op zijn rug vormen een ondoordringbaar pantser, zodat er geen lucht tussen kan komen en niemand erin slaagt ze te doorboren. 20Wanneer hij snuift, schieten lichtflitsen naar buiten. Zijn ogen gloeien als de eerste zonnestralen.
21Vuur springt uit zijn muil.
22Er komt rook uit zijn neusgaten, net als uit een kookpot die op een fel brandend vuur staat.
23Ja, zijn adem kan kolen laten ontbranden, vlammen schieten op uit zijn bek.
24In zijn nek schuilt een angstaanjagende kracht die overal verschrikking zaait.
25Zijn vlees is hard en stevig, niet zacht en vet.
26Zijn hart is zo hard als rots, als een molensteen.
27Als hij opstaat, slaat zelfs de sterkste mannen de angst om het hart. Zij vluchten weg voordat ze door hem worden verpletterd.
28Een zwaard is een nutteloos wapen tegen hem en ook andere wapens halen niets uit.

Tegenover zijn kracht is ijzer net zo nutteloos als stro, en koper net zo week als verrot hout. Voor pijlen slaat hij niet op de vlucht. Slingerstenen dan? U kunt net zo goed proberen hem met watten dood te gooien! 31Stokken zijn net zo goed als strohalmen en hij lacht als men speren naar hem toeslingert.
32Zijn buik is bedekt met schubben die zo scherp zijn als glasscherven en hij beweegt zich over het land voort als een dorsmachine.

Als hij zich opwindt, bruist het water omhoog en komen zelfs de diepere waterlagen in beroering. Als hij zich door het water beweegt, laat hij een breed lichtend spoor van schuim achter. Het water lijkt dan net zilverkleurig haar.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
