Ik weet heel goed dat de Almachtige God ons lot in handen heeft. De slechten en goddelozen treft Hij met ellende en rampen. 6Hij ziet alles wat ik doe en telt elke stap die ik zet.
7Als ik zou hebben gelogen en bedrogen,
8laat God mij dan maar in zijn eerlijke weegschaal wegen, dan zal Hij zien dat ik onschuldig ben.

Als ik van de door God gewezen weg ben afgeweken, als mijn hart begeerte heeft gevoeld voor wat mijn ogen zagen of als ik met mijn handen heb gezondigd, laat iemand anders dan de gewassen die ik heb gezaaid, oogsten en laat alles wat ik heb geplant, met wortel en tak worden uitgeroeid. 11Als ik ooit heb verlangd naar de vrouw van een ander,
12mag mijn vrouw terechtkomen in het huis van een andere man en mag iemand anders haar nemen.
13Want dat zou een schanddaad zijn, een misdaad die moet worden bestraft.
14Het is een verterend vuur dat een mens in het verderf stort en alles zou uitroeien wat ik heb geplant.

Hoe zou ik God onder ogen kunnen komen als ik ooit mijn dienaren onrechtvaardig had behandeld? Wat zou ik kunnen zeggen als Hij mij daarnaar zou vragen? 17Want God heeft mij en ook mijn dienaar gemaakt. Hij heeft ons beiden geschapen in de buik van onze moeders.
18Als ik de armen verdriet heb gedaan en weduwen reden tot huilen heb gegeven,
19als ik arme wezen voedsel heb geweigerd
20—ik heb echter altijd wezen in ons huis opgenomen en hen verzorgd als mijn eigen kinderen en ik heb de weduwen altijd geholpen—

als ik iemand heb zien omkomen van de kou zonder hem kleren of de vacht van een van mijn schapen te geven, 23als ik een wees heb uitgebuit omdat ik dacht dat niemand mij daarop zou betrappen,
24als ik een van deze dingen heb gedaan, mag mijn arm uit zijn gewricht worden getrokken! Laat dan mijn schouder maar worden ontwricht!
25Liever dat dan het oordeel van God af te wachten, want daarvoor ben ik banger dan voor enig ander ding. Want juist vanwege de majesteit van God heb ik al die misdaden nooit begaan.
26Als ik op geld heb vertrouwd,
27als mijn geluk berustte op rijkdom die ik met eigen handen heb verdiend,
28of als ik heb gekeken naar de stralende zon aan de hemel of naar de maan die als een edelsteen langs de hemel voortfonkelt,
29en mijn hart geen weerstand heeft kunnen bieden aan de verleiding om hen stiekem te aanbidden en hen met mijn hand een kus toe te werpen,
30dan zouden deze misdaden ook moeten worden bestraft. Want als ik zulke dingen had gedaan, zou dat betekenen dat ik de God van de hemel heb bedrogen.
31Als ik blij ben geweest over het ongeluk en de tegenslagen van mijn vijand
32—maar het is een feit dat ik nooit heb gezondigd door iemand te vervloeken—
33als een van mijn dienaren ooit honger heeft geleden
34—ik heb echter nooit een vreemde bij de deur weggestuurd, maar altijd iedereen met open armen ontvangen—
35of als ik net als Adam mijn zonden heb geprobeerd te verbergen
36uit angst voor de minachting van het publiek en ik mijn mond heb gehouden en mezelf heb opgesloten, dan ben ik het waard te worden gestraft.
37Ach, was er maar iemand die naar mij wilde luisteren en de zaak van mijn kant wilde bekijken. Kijk, ik onderteken mijn verdediging met mijn handtekening. Laat de Almachtige nu maar eens bewijzen dat ik iets verkeerds heb gedaan en laat Hij maar een oordeel geven over de schriftelijke aanklacht die mijn vijanden tegen mij hebben ingediend.
38Ik zou die op mijn schouders willen nemen en als een kroon opzetten.
39Dan zou ik Hem precies vertellen wat ik heb gedaan en waarom, als een koning zou ik Hem tegemoet treden.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
