Zijn rijkdom zal op de dag van Gods toorn in een vloedgolf wegspoelen.1Dat is Gods bestemming voor de goddeloze, de erfenis die God hem geeft.’

‘Luister nu toch naar mij, dat zou al een hele troost zijn. Je kunt doorgaan met spotten wanneer ik ben uitgesproken. 6Mijn klacht richt zich toch niet tot mensen, maar tot God. Daarom ben ik ook zo ongeduldig.
7Bekijk mij met afschuw en sla je hand verschrikt voor de mond.
8Als ik hier diep over nadenk, word ik er zelf bang van en begin ik te beven.
9Waarom bereiken de goddelozen een hoge leeftijd en wordt hun macht steeds groter?
10Tijdens hun leven zien zij hun kinderen en kleinkinderen opgroeien en volwassen worden.
11In hun huizen is vrede, angst is voor hen een onbekend gevoel en God straft hen niet.

Hun vee is gezond en vruchtbaar, zij hebben veel kinderen die een gelukkig leven leiden en hun kleinkinderen vullen hun tijd met zingen en dansen en musiceren op trommel, citer en fluit. Zij zijn welgesteld en hoeven zichzelf niets te ontzeggen. Zelfs wanneer ze sterven, gebeurt dat in alle rust en vrede. 16En dat alles ondanks het feit dat zij God afwezen en niets te maken wilden hebben met Hem en zijn leefregels.
17“Wat moeten we met de Almachtige God?” zeggen zij. “Waarom zouden wij Hem moeten gehoorzamen? Bidden tot Hem levert ons immers niets op?”
18Jullie zeggen dat zij hun welvaart niet in eigen hand hebben, daarom wil ik ook niets met hun raad en plannen te maken hebben.
19Hoe vaak gaat het licht van de goddelozen niet plotseling uit en treft God hen met rampen en verdriet!
20Zij worden als stro door de wind voortgejaagd, de storm rukt hen weg als kaf van het koren!
21Maar God zal ook hun kinderen straffen! Maar volgens mij moet de man die zondigt, zelf door God worden gestraft en niet zijn kinderen! Laat hij zelf de straf maar voelen!
22Ja, laat hem voor zijn eigen zonde boeten. Laat hem de toorn van de Almachtige maar aan den lijve voelen.
23Want als hij dood is, zal hij nooit meer in staat zijn van zijn gezin te genieten.
24Maar wie kan God, de opperste Rechter, terechtwijzen?

De een sterft wanneer hij nog gezond is en weldoorvoed een rustig en vredig leven leidt. 27De ander sterft in diepe ellende en armoede, terwijl hij nooit iets goeds heeft gekend.
28Beiden worden in dezelfde aarde begraven en door dezelfde wormen opgegeten.
29Ik weet precies wat jullie nu denken en hoe jullie mij nu onrecht willen aandoen.
30Jullie willen mij gaan vertellen over rijke en goddeloze mensen, die door hun zonden in het verderf werden gestort.
31Maar dan zeg ik: Vraag het maar eens aan hen die veel hebben gereisd en zij zullen jullie hun verhalen vertellen.

Dat de goddeloze mens op de onheilsdag wordt gespaard en aan de toorn weet te ontsnappen. Niemand wijst hem in het openbaar op zijn fouten. Niemand zet hem zijn misdaden betaald. En bij zijn graf wordt een erewacht opgesteld.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
