U keert zich tegen hem en hij verdwijnt van de aarde. U geeft hem een oud en gerimpeld gezicht en stuurt hem dan weg. Hij weet nooit of zijn zonen het ver zullen brengen of dat zij falen en ten val komen. Hij merkt het niet. 1Voor hem is er alleen pijn en verdriet.’

Het antwoord van Elifaz
3Op deze uitspraken antwoordde Elifaz:4‘Je wordt beschouwd als een wijs man, maar je spreekt alleen maar nietszeggende woorden. Je bent gewoon een druktemaker!

Je vertekent de ware toewijding aan God en hebt geen ontzag voor Hem. Jouw zonden vertellen je mond wat hij moet zeggen. Je spreekt met de tong van een listig man. 8Daardoor veroordeel jij jezelf en niet ik, de woorden die je spreekt, getuigen tegen je.

Ben jij soms de eerste mens, werd jij geboren voordat de heuvels werden geschapen? Ken je de verborgen beslissingen van God? Heb jij soms de wijsheid in pacht? 11Weet je meer dan wij? Begrijp je meer dan wij kunnen begrijpen?
12Aan onze kant staan wijze, bejaarde mannen die zelfs ouder zijn dan je vader.
13Is Gods troost niet genoeg voor jou? Zijn zijn woorden niet vriendelijk tegen jou gesproken?
14Waarom laat je je meeslepen door je zondige hart en vlammen je ogen zo?
15Je keert je tegen God en beschuldigt Hem in het wilde weg!
16Welk mens op aarde kan zo rein en rechtvaardig zijn als jij zegt?
17Als God zelfs de engelen niet volledig vertrouwt en zelfs de hemelen in zijn ogen niet volkomen rein zijn,
18waar blijft de mens dan met zijn verdorvenheid en zondigheid? De mens, die de zonde drinkt alsof het water is.

Luister, ik zal je verklaren wat ik heb gezien en wat bevestigd wordt door de ervaringen van wijze mannen, die dit kregen overgeleverd van hun vaders (onze voorouders, die als enigen het land kregen toegewezen): 22een goddeloos mens heeft zijn hele leven met moeilijkheden te kampen. De geweldpleger heeft slechts enkele jaren de tijd.
23Hij wordt geplaagd door angstaanjagende geruchten en wanneer hij eindelijk rust heeft gevonden, wordt hij aangevallen door rovers.
24Hij gelooft niet dat hij nog ooit de duisternis kan ontvluchten en leeft voortdurend met de angst dat hij wordt vermoord.

Hoewel deze mens er vet en opgeblazen uitziet, zal hij in verwoeste steden moeten wonen, in verlaten huizen die tot puin zijn vervallen. 31Hij zal niet rijk blijven en er niet in slagen zijn bezittingen uit te breiden.
32Nee, hij zal voor altijd in duisternis leven en de adem van God zal hem vernietigen, de vlammen zullen alles wat hij heeft, verteren.
33Laat hij niet langer vertrouwen op zinloze bezigheden en zichzelf niet meer voor de gek houden, want zinloosheid zal zijn enige beloning zijn.
34Vroeger dan hij denkt, zal dit werkelijkheid worden. Spoedig zal de volle nutteloosheid ervan tot hem doordringen. Want alles waarop hij vertrouwde, zal vergaan.
35Hij zal lijken op een onvruchtbare wijnstok en op een olijfboom zonder bloesem.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
