De reactie van Sofar
3Daarop zei Sofar uit Naäma tegen Job: 4‘Deze woordenvloed vraagt gewoon om een antwoord! Iemand heeft toch geen gelijk alleen maar omdat hij zoveel praat? 5Moet ik mij stilhouden, terwijl ik je hoor zwetsen? Als jij met God spot, moet iemand er dan niet voor zorgen dat je je schaamt? 6Jij beweert dat je het ware geloof hebt en onschuldig bent in de ogen van God. 7Zei God maar eens wat Hij van jou denkt! 8Zorgde Hij er maar voor dat je zelf eens het geheim van de wijsheid zou begrijpen, want er zijn twee kanten aan de wijsheid. Luister! God straft jou ongetwijfeld veel lichter dan je werkelijk verdient! 9Ken je de gedachten en plannen van God? Kun je er door lang zoeken achter komen wat de grenzen van de Almachtige zijn? 10Die grenzen zijn hoger dan de hemel en dieper dan de hel. Maar wie ben jij dan dat je denkt die te kunnen zien? 11Zijn grootheid is uitgestrekter dan de aarde en breder dan de zee. 12Als Hij iemand achtervolgt, gevangenneemt en het gerechtshof bijeenroept, wie zou Hem dan een halt kunnen toeroepen? 13Want Hij kent alle zonden van de kwaadaardige mens, Hij ziet de zonde zonder ernaar te zoeken. 14Dat een gewone sterveling wijs kan worden, is net zo onmogelijk als dat een ezelsveulen als mens ter wereld komt. 15▼

Maar als jij je aan God overgeeft, je handen naar Hem uitstrekt, de zonde wegdoet uit je hart en geen kwade praktijken meer toelaat bij jou thuis, 17alleen dan kun je je hoofd opheffen, zonder dat je bent verontreinigd door de smetten van de zonde. 18Alleen dan zul je de ellende kunnen vergeten. Dat alles zal dan tot het verleden behoren. 19Jouw bestaan zal wolkenloos worden, elke schaduwzijde zal zo helder worden als het morgenlicht. 20Jij zult moed putten uit je hoop. Je zult je rondom veilig weten en rustig kunnen gaan slapen.
