Jeremiah 49
Zo waar Ik leef,’ zegt de koning, de Here van de hemelse legers, ‘zo zeker als de berg Tabor uitsteekt boven andere bergen en zo zeker als de berg Karmel aan de kust ligt, zo zeker wordt Egypte overweldigd! 1Pak uw bezittingen bij elkaar, maak u klaar om in ballingschap te gaan, inwoners van Egypte, want de stad Memfis zal totaal worden verwoest en zonder overlevenden worden achtergelaten. 2 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse Jer. 46:21.

Egypte lijkt op een mooie jonge koe, maar een horzel uit het noorden komt op haar af! Zelfs haar befaamde huurlingen lijken nu op vetgemeste kalveren. Sissend als een wegglijdende slang vlucht Egypte, het aanvallende leger marcheert binnen. Talloze soldaten slaan uw mensen neer als houthakkers die een bos omkappen. 6Het volk van Egypte is verslagen, in de handen gevallen van het volk uit het noorden.’ 7De Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, zegt: ‘Ik zal Amon, de god van Thebe, en alle andere Egyptische goden straffen. Ook de farao zal Ik straffen, evenals allen die op hem vertrouwen. 8Ik zal hen in handen geven van degenen die hen naar het leven staan, in handen van koning Nebukadnessar van Babel en zijn leger. Pas lang daarna zal het land zich weer herstellen van de door de oorlog aangerichte verwoestingen. 9Maar u hoeft niet bang te zijn, volk van Mij dat terugkeert naar uw eigen land. Wees niet angstig, want Ik zal u uit dat verre land bevrijden en uw kinderen uit de gevangenschap terugbrengen. Ja, Israël zal terugkeren en rust krijgen. Niets zal haar nog bang maken. 10Wees niet bang, mijn dienaar Jakob,’ zegt de Here, ‘want Ik ben bij u. De volken waarheen Ik u in ballingschap gestuurd heb, zal Ik vernietigen, maar u verwoest Ik niet volledig. Ik zal u straffen, maar niet meer dan nodig is om u op het rechte pad te houden.’ 11 12De Filistijnen Dit is de boodschap van de Here aan Jeremia over de Filistijnen, voordat de stad Gaza werd ingenomen door de Egyptenaren. 13De Here zegt: ‘Een vloed komt uit het noorden opzetten om het land van de Filistijnen te overstromen, hij zal hun steden en alles en iedereen die zich daar bevindt, verwoesten. De mensen zullen schreeuwen van angst en het hele land zal huilen. 14Hoor de kletterende hoeven van machtige paarden en de ratelende wagenwielen als de strijdwagens naderbij razen. Vaders vluchten weg zonder om te kijken naar hun hulpeloze kinderen, 15want de tijd is gekomen dat alle Filistijnen, de laatst overgebleven bondgenoten van Tyrus en Sidon, worden vernietigd. Want de Here vernietigt de Filistijnen, die kolonisten uit Kreta. 16De steden Gaza en Askelon zullen met de grond gelijkgemaakt worden, alleen puinhopen zullen ervan overblijven. Filistijnen, wat zult u klagen en rouwen! 17“Zwaard van de Here, wanneer zult u weer tot rust komen?” zullen zij roepen. “Ga terug in uw schede, rust en wees stil!” 18Maar hoe kan het zich rustig houden als de Here het opdracht heeft gegeven? Want de stad Askelon en de kustbewoners moeten van Hem worden vernietigd.’ 19 20De Moabieten Dit is wat de Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, over Moab zegt: ‘De stad Nebo zal in een ruïne veranderen. Het is afgelopen met Moabs roem, want er is een samenzwering tegen hem gesmeed. In Chesbon zijn plannen gemaakt die tot zijn vernietiging moeten leiden. “Vooruit,” zeggen zij, “wij zullen ervoor zorgen dat dat volk wordt uitgeroeid.” Ook de stad Madmen zal het zwijgen worden opgelegd. En dan zullen de chaos en het oorlogsgeweld zich over Choronaïm storten, want heel Moab wordt vernietigd. Al zijn kinderen schreeuwen het uit. 24De vluchtelingen zullen bitter huilend de heuvels van Luchit beklimmen, terwijl angstkreten opklinken uit de stad beneden hen. 25Vlucht voor uw leven, verberg u in het struikgewas van de woestijn! 26Want u vertrouwde op uw rijkdom en uw eigen prestaties, daarom zult u als balling worden weggevoerd. Uw god Kemos, met al zijn priesters en dienaren, zal worden meegenomen naar verre landen! 27Alle dorpen en steden op de hoogvlakten en in de dalen zullen worden verwoest, want de Here heeft het gezegd. 28Och, had Moab maar vleugels, dan kon het wegvliegen, want zijn steden zullen zonder één levende ziel achterblijven. 29Vervloekt zijn zij die niet doen wat de Here zegt en geen bloed willen vergieten! 30Vanaf zijn ontstaan heeft Moab hier gelegen, rustig, niet gestoord door vijandige invallen. Het lijkt op wijn die niet van het ene vat in het andere is overgegoten en daardoor zijn aroma en smaak heeft behouden. Maar nu zal het in ballingschap worden gestuurd! 31Er komt een tijd,’ heeft de Here gezegd, ‘dat Ik mannen zal sturen die de vaten zullen leeggieten en de kruiken kapot zullen slaan! 32Dan zal het vertrouwen van Moab in zijn god Kemos worden beschaamd, net als het vertrouwen van Israël in zijn kalfgod in Betel. 33Herinnert u zich uw opschepperij nog: “Wij zijn helden, moedige mannen in de strijd.” 34Maar nu staat Moab op het punt te worden vernietigd, zijn beste jongemannen zijn gedoemd te worden afgeslacht,’ zegt de koning, de Here van de hemelse legers. 35‘Rampen zullen Moab nu snel treffen, zijn ondergang is nabij. 36Vrienden van Moab, huil om Moab en troost het! Kijk eens hoe het sterke en roemrijke Moab is vernietigd! 37Kom naar beneden uit uw glorie en ga in het stof zitten, mensen van Dibon, want zij die Moab verwoesten, zullen dat ook met u doen. Al haar versterkte muren zullen worden neergehaald. 38De mensen in Aroër staan langs de weg angstig toe te kijken en vragen de vluchtelingen uit Moab: “Wat is er gebeurd?” 39En die antwoorden: “Moab is totaal verwoest, huil en treur. Vertel aan de oevers van de Arnon dat er van Moab nog slechts een puinhoop over is.”

How do I do a word study?

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
