Als Ik aankondig dat een land of koninkrijk moet worden vernietigd en dat volk keert terug van zijn zondige wegen, dan wil Ik mijn genade tonen en zal Ik het niet vernietigen, zoals was aangekondigd. 2En als Ik aankondig dat Ik een land groot en machtig zal maken, 3maar dat land begint te zondigen en weigert Mij te gehoorzamen, dan zal Ik van gedachten veranderen en dat land niet zegenen, zoals Ik had beloofd. 4Waarschuw daarom Juda en Jeruzalem met deze woorden: luister naar de woorden van de Here: Ik ben van plan een ramp over u voor te bereiden, dus bekeer u van uw zondige praktijken en doe wat goed is. 5Maar zij zullen antwoorden: “Verspil uw energie maar niet. Wij zijn echt niet van plan te doen wat God zegt. Wij maken zelf wel uit wat wij doen en we zullen gewoon doorgaan met alles wat ons hart ons ingeeft, ook al is dat zondig!” ’ 6Toen zei de Here: ‘Zelfs onder de heidenen heeft men nog nooit zoiets gehoord! Mijn volk heeft iets gedaan wat te vreselijk is om te begrijpen. 7De sneeuw hoog op de bergen van de Libanon smelt nooit. De koude bergstromen die over de hellingen van de bergen naar beneden komen, drogen nooit op. 8Daarop kan men rekenen. Maar niet op mijn volk! Want dat heeft Mij vergeten en zich tot waardeloze afgoden gewend. Het heeft zich afgekeerd van de aloude, goede wegen en bewandelt nu de modderige paden van de zonde waarop men makkelijk struikelt. 9Daarom zal het land een verlaten wildernis worden en een aanfluiting voor ieder die erdoor trekt. Men zal verbaasd het hoofd schudden over deze troosteloze verlatenheid. 10Ik zal mijn volk voor zijn vijanden uiteenjagen, zoals de oostenwind het stof opjaagt en ondanks alle moeilijkheden zal Ik het de rug toekeren en geen aandacht schenken aan zijn nood.’ 11Toen zeiden de mensen: ‘Vooruit, laten wij Jeremia uit de weg ruimen. Wij hebben onze eigen priesters, profeten en wijzen, wij hebben zijn raad niet nodig. Laten we hem het zwijgen opleggen, zodat hij nooit meer tegen ons spreekt of ons nog lastigvalt.’ 12Och Here, help mij! Hoort U wat zij met mij van plan zijn? 13Moet goed met kwaad worden vergolden? Zij zijn van plan mij te doden, hoewel ik een goed woordje voor hen heb gedaan bij U en heb geprobeerd hen tegen uw toorn te beschermen. 14Here, laat hun kinderen nu maar van honger sterven en laat het zwaard hun bloed vergieten! Laat hun vrouwen maar weduwen worden, beroofd van al hun kinderen! Laat hun mannen maar sterven door de pest en hun jonge mannen in de oorlog sneuvelen! 15Laat ze maar schreeuwen, als hun huizen plotseling worden overvallen door soldaten, want zij hebben een valkuil voor mij gegraven en valstrikken op mijn pad gelegd. 16Here, U kent al hun moordzuchtige plannen. Vergeef hen niet, wis hun zonde niet uit, maar laat hen uit uw ogen verdwijnen, laat uw toorn op hen los. 17 Verwoesting van Jeruzalem voorzegd

De Here zei: ‘Koop bij een pottenbakker een aarden kruik en breng die naar het dal Ben-Hinnom bij de zuidelijke poort van de stad. Neem enkele leiders van het volk en enige oudere priesters mee en zeg tegen hen wat Ik u ingeef: 20“Luister naar de woorden van de Here, koningen van Juda en inwoners van Jeruzalem! De Here van de hemelse legers, de God van Israël, zegt: Ik zal een vreselijke ramp over deze plaats brengen, zo vreselijk, dat van hen die ervan horen, de oren zullen tuiten. 21Want dit volk heeft Mij verlaten en heeft dit dal veranderd in een plaats van schande en afgoderij. Het volk verbrandt hier reukwerk voor goden die deze generatie, hun voorouders en de koningen van Juda nooit hebben gekend. Zij hebben dit dal doordrenkt met het bloed van onschuldigen. 22Zij hebben hoge altaren gebouwd voor Baäl waarop zij hun kinderen als offers verbranden. Zoiets heb Ik hun nooit bevolen en dat zou ook nooit in Mij zijn opgekomen! 23Er komt een tijd,” zegt de Here, “dat dit dal niet meer Tofet of Ben-Hinnom, maar Moorddal zal worden genoemd. 24Want Ik zal de plannen van Juda en Jeruzalem in dit dal in duigen laten vallen en binnenvallende legers de kans geven u hier te doden. Uw lijken zullen achterblijven als voedsel voor de gieren en de wilde dieren. 25Ik zal Jeruzalem van de aarde wegvagen, zodat iedereen die hier langskomt, vol verachting en verbijsterd haar ellende zal aanzien. 26Ik zal ervoor zorgen dat uw vijanden de stad belegeren tot alle voedselvoorraden op zijn en de mensen die binnen de muren opgesloten zitten, hun eigen kinderen zullen opeten.” 27Jeremia, smijt de kruik die u bij u hebt, voor de ogen van deze mannen kapot 28en zeg tegen hen: “Dit is de boodschap van de Here van de hemelse legers aan u: zoals deze kruik kapotgegooid is, zo zal Ik ook doen met de inwoners van Jeruzalem, en net als deze kruik kunnen zij niet worden hersteld. De slachtpartij zal zo groot zijn dat er geen plaats meer is voor fatsoenlijke begrafenissen. Hun lijken zullen in dit dal worden opgestapeld. 29In Jeruzalem zal het net zo zijn. Want ook Jeruzalem zal Ik met lijken vullen. 30Ik zal alle huizen in Jeruzalem verontreinigen, ook het paleis van de koningen van Juda, overal waar op de daken werd geofferd aan de sterren en waar drankoffers werden uitgegoten voor andere afgoden.” ’

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
