Jeremiah 14

Toen sprak de Here opnieuw tegen Jeremia en zei: ‘Herinner de mannen van Juda en alle inwoners van Jeruzalem eraan dat Ik een verbond heb gesloten met hun voorouders. Vervloekt is de man die zich niet daaraan houdt! 1Toen Ik hen uit de slavernij in Egypte bevrijdde, heb Ik dit verbond gesloten en hun verteld dat als zij Mij zouden gehoorzamen en zouden doen wat Ik hun gebied, zij en al hun kinderen mijn eigendom zouden zijn en Ik hun God zou zijn. 2Dan zou Ik Mij ook aan de belofte houden die Ik uw voorouders gegeven heb, namelijk om hun een land te geven dat overvloeit van melk en honing, het land dat u momenteel in bezit hebt.’ Toen antwoordde ik: ‘Zo zij het, Here!’ 3Daarna zei de Here: ‘Breng deze boodschap in de straten van Jeruzalem, ga van stad naar stad het hele land Juda door en zeg: “Denk aan het verbond dat uw voorouders met God gesloten hebben en doe alles wat zij Hem beloofden.” 4Want toen Ik uw vaders uit Egypte bevrijdde, heb Ik waarschuwend tegen hen gezegd—en Ik heb dat tot op deze dag steeds weer herhaald: gehoorzaam alles wat Ik zeg! 5Maar uw vaders deden dat niet. Zij wilden zelfs niet luisteren. Nee, zij volgden hun eigen koppige wil en zondige hart. Omdat zij weigerden te gehoorzamen, heb Ik hen gestraft met de straffen die in het verbond waren opgenomen.’ 6De Here sprak opnieuw tegen mij en zei: ‘Ik heb een samenzwering tegen Mij ontdekt onder de mannen van Juda en Jeruzalem. 7Zij doen dezelfde zonden als hun voorouders die weigerden naar Mij te luisteren. Zij aanbidden afgoden. Het verbond dat Ik met hun vaders heb gesloten, hebben zij verbroken en nietig verklaard. 8Daarom,’ zegt de Here, ‘zal Ik rampen over hen brengen waaraan zij niet zullen kunnen ontsnappen. Ook al kermen zij om genade, Ik zal niet naar hun smeekbeden luisteren. 9Dan zullen zij tot hun afgoden bidden en reukwerk voor hen branden, maar die zullen hen niet kunnen bevrijden van de rampen. 10O mijn volk, u hebt net zoveel goden als steden en uw schandelijke altaren waarop u reukwerk voor Baäl brandt, staan in elke straat in Jeruzalem. 11Daarom, Jeremia, moet u niet langer bidden voor dit volk. Huil en smeek niet meer, want Ik zal niet luisteren wanneer het uiteindelijk zo vertwijfeld is dat het Mij om hulp smeekt. 12Welk recht heeft mijn geliefde volk nog om naar mijn tempel te komen? Want u bent ontrouw geweest en hebt samen met anderen afgoden aanbeden. Kunnen beloften en offers uw straf nu nog afwenden en u opnieuw leven en vreugde geven ondanks uw goddeloosheid? 13De Here noemde u altijd zijn groene olijfboom, prachtig om te zien en vol goede vruchten, maar nu heeft Hij een verwoestend onweer op u afgestuurd dat u met vuur zal verbranden en gebroken en verkoold zal achterlaten. 14Vanwege de goddeloosheid van Israël en Juda in het verbranden van reukwerk voor Baäl, heeft de Here van de hemelse legers, die deze boom plantte, bevolen hem te vernietigen.’ 15Toen vertelde de Here mij alles over hun plannen en liet mij de duistere samenzweringen zien die tegen mij waren beraamd. 16Ik was zo onwetend geweest als een lam op weg naar het slachthuis. Ik wist niet dat zij van plan waren mij te doden! ‘Laten wij deze man en alles wat hij zegt vernietigen,’ zeiden zij. ‘Laten wij hem doden, zodat zijn naam voor altijd wordt vergeten.’ 17Och Here van de hemelse legers, U bent mijn rechter. Beoordeel de harten en drijfveren van deze mannen. Zet hun alles wat zij van plan waren, betaald! De Here antwoordde: ‘De mensen uit de stad Anatot zullen worden gestraft voor het beramen van een moord op u. Zij zullen tegen u zeggen dat u moet ophouden te profeteren in de naam van God, omdat zij u anders zullen doden. En daarom zullen hun jonge mannen in de strijd omkomen, hun jongens en meisjes zullen verhongeren. 20Niet één van deze samenzweerders uit Anatot zal het overleven, want Ik zal een ramp over hen brengen. Hun tijd is gekomen.’ 21 Het volk door de Here verstoten
22 Here, U bent altijd rechtvaardig als ik een zaak aan U voorleg om uw beslissing te horen. Mag ik daarom deze klacht aan U voorleggen: Waarom gaat het slechte mensen altijd goed? Waarom hebben de goddelozen zoʼn gemakkelijk leven?

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
