De dromen van Jozef
1Zo vestigde Jakob zich weer in het land Kanaän, waar zijn vader had gewoond. 2Jakobs zoon Jozef was zeventien jaar oud. Samen met zijn halfbroers, de zonen van zijn vaders vrouwen Bilha en Zilpa, hoedde hij de schapen. Maar Jozef vertelde het zijn vader als de andere jongens een streek uithaalden. 3Nu was het zo dat Israël meer van Jozef hield dan van zijn andere kinderen, omdat hij deze zoon op hoge leeftijd had gekregen. Op een dag gaf Jakob hem een prachtige, veelkleurige mantel. 4Zijn broers hadden al lang ontdekt dat Jozef de lieveling van hun vader was en daarom haatten zijn hem. Er kon geen vriendelijk woord voor hun broer af. 5Op een nacht had Jozef een droom, die hij prompt aan zijn broers vertelde. Zo maakte hij zich nog meer gehaat. 6‘Moet je luisteren,’ kondigde hij trots aan, 7‘we waren met zʼn allen op het land schoven aan het binden. Toen ging mijn schoof opeens rechtop staan en jullie schoven kwamen eromheen staan en bogen diep voor hem!’ 8‘Dus jij wilt ons de baas zijn?’ vroegen zijn broers smalend. Hierna haatten zij hem nog meer, zowel om zijn droom als om zijn gedrag. 9Jozef kreeg nog een tweede droom, die hij weer aan zijn broers vertelde. ‘Moeten jullie nu eens luisteren,’ zei hij. ‘De zon, de maan en elf sterren bogen diep voor mij!’ 10Deze keer vertelde hij zijn droom ook aan zijn vader, maar die wees hem terecht. ‘Wat zullen we nu krijgen,’ zei hij, ‘moeten ik, je moeder en je broers werkelijk voor jou buigen?’ 11Jozefs broers waren jaloers op hem, maar zijn vader hield het verhaal in zijn achterhoofd en vroeg zich af wat die droom kon betekenen. 12Jozefs broers trokken met de schapen naar Sichem om ze daar te laten grazen. 13Enkele dagen later riep Israël Jozef bij zich en zei: ‘Je broers laten de schapen bij Sichem grazen. 14Ik wil graag dat je erheen gaat om te kijken hoe het met hen en de schapen is. Daarna moet je het mij komen vertellen.’ ‘Dat zal ik doen,’ zei Jozef. Hij reisde vanuit het dal van Hebron naar Sichem. 15Toen hij door de velden zwierf op zoek naar zijn broers, zag een man hem en vroeg: ‘Wie zoek je?’ 16‘Ik zoek mijn broers en de schapen,’ gaf Jozef als antwoord. ‘Hebt u ze soms gezien?’ 17‘Jazeker,’ zei de man, ‘maar ze zijn hier niet meer. Ik hoorde hen zeggen dat ze naar Dotan gingen.’ Jozef volgde zijn broers naar Dotan en vond hen daar. 18Maar toen zij hem zagen aankomen, besloten zij hem te doden! 19 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 1.Mos. 37:20.

‘Kijk, daar komt die grote dromer aan,’ riepen ze. ‘Vooruit, laten we hem doden en dan in een waterput gooien. We kunnen vader vertellen dat een wild dier hem heeft opgegeten. Maar Ruben voelde daar niets voor en zei: ‘Laten we hem niet doden. We mogen geen bloed vergieten. We kunnen hem beter levend in een waterput gooien, dan hoeven wij onze handen niet vuil te maken,’ (Ruben wilde Jozef later uit de put halen en hem terugbrengen bij zijn vader.) 23 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 1.Mos. 37:24.

Dus pakten zij Jozef zo gauw hij bij hen was in zijn kraag, trokken hem zijn mooie, veelkleurige mantel uit en gooiden hem in een droogstaande waterput. 25Toen gingen ze bij elkaar zitten om te eten. ‘Kijk eens,’ zei Juda tegen de anderen. ‘Daar komt een stel Ismaëlieten aan. Laten we Jozef aan hen verkopen, in plaats van hem te doden, want hij is tenslotte onze broer.’ Zijn broers waren het met hem eens. 28Toen de karavaan bij hen aankwam, haalden ze Jozef uit de put en verkochten hem voor twintig zilverstukken aan de handelaars, die hem meenamen naar Egypte. 29Een tijdje later kwam Ruben, die er niet bij was toen de karavaan langskwam, terug om Jozef uit de put te halen. Toen hij merkte dat Jozef weg was, scheurde hij zijn kleren als teken van verdriet. 30‘De jongen is weg. En ik? Waar moet ik nu heen?’ zei hij treurig tegen zijn broers. 31Toen doodden de broers een geit en besmeurden Jozefs mantel met het bloed. 32Die namen zij mee naar hun vader. ‘We hebben dit in het veld gevonden,’ zeiden zij hem. ‘Is het Jozefs mantel of niet?’ 33Hun vader herkende de mantel ogenblikkelijk. ‘Ja,’ zei hij bedroefd, ‘dat is de mantel van mijn zoon. Een wild dier moet hem hebben opgegeten. Hij is zonder twijfel verscheurd.’ 34Toen scheurde Jakob zijn kleren en trok een rouwmantel aan. Hij treurde diep om zijn zoon, wekenlang. 35Zijn familieleden probeerden hem te troosten, maar het hielp niets. ‘Ik zal treuren om mijn zoon tot ik in mijn graf neerdaal,’ zei Jakob. En toen begon hij weer te huilen. 36In Egypte aangekomen, verkochten de handelaars Jozef aan Potifar, een dienaar van de farao, de koning van Egypte. Potifar was de commandant van de lijfwacht.

It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
