De toren van Babel
1In die tijd spraken alle mensen één taal. 2De bevolking groeide en trok in oostelijke richting. Toen ontdekte men in het land Sinear een grote vlakte, waar het goed wonen was. Veel mensen trokken daarheen en het werd een dichtbevolkt gebied. 3De bewoners van die vlakte waren van plan een grote stad te bouwen en een hoge toren die tot in de hemel reikte. Een eeuwig monument voor de bouwers. 4‘Op die manier krijgen we een centrale plaats voor onze mensen, zodat we niet steeds verder hoeven te zwerven,’ meenden zij. En zo begon de bouw van de stad. Toen de Here de bouw van de stad en de toren zag, zei Hij: ‘Kijk eens wat zij al bereiken nu ze nog maar aan het begin van hun samenwerking staan. Voor dit volk met zijn ene taal zal voortaan niets meer onmogelijk zijn! 7Laten Wij afdalen en hun verschillende talen geven, zodat zij elkaar niet meer begrijpen!’ 8Op die manier verspreidde God de mensen over de hele aarde en zij stopten met de bouw van de stad. 9Daarom werd die stad Babel (Verwarring) genoemd. Hier is nog eens een opsomming, nu uitgebreider, van de nakomelingen van Sem. Twee jaar na de grote watervloed—Sem was toen honderd jaar oud—kreeg hij een zoon, Arpachsad. Toen Terach werd geboren, was zijn vader Nachor zesentwintig. Nachor leefde nog honderdnegentien jaar en kreeg nog meer zonen en dochters. 26Toen Terach zeventig was, kreeg hij drie zonen: Abram, Nachor en Haran. 27Haran had een zoon, Lot. 28Haran stierf echter jong in zijn geboorteland (Ur der Chaldeeën), zodat zijn vader hem overleefde. 29In de tussentijd trouwde Abram met zijn halfzuster Sarai en Nachor trouwde met Milka, de dochter van Haran. Haran was ook de vader van Jiska. 30Sarai was onvruchtbaar en kreeg geen kinderen. 31Op een goede dag brak Terach op vanuit Ur der Chaldeeën om samen met Abram, Harans zoon Lot en Abrams vrouw Sarai naar het land Kanaän te gaan. Onderweg bleven zij echter in de stad Haran en vestigden zich daar. 32Daar stierf Terach. Hij was tweehonderdvijf jaar oud geworden.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
