Koning Hazaël van Syrië stierf en zijn zoon Benhadad volgde hem op. 1Koning Joas van Israël, de zoon van Joachaz, had driemaal succes bij de herovering van de steden die zijn vader aan Benhadad had verloren. 2Amasja, koning van Juda
3In het tweede regeringsjaar van koning Joas van Israël kwam koning Amasja in Juda aan het bewind. 4Amasja was op dat moment vijfentwintig jaar en bleef negenentwintig jaar aan de regering. Zijn moeder heette Jehoaddan en was een geboren Jeruzalemse. 5Hij was een goede koning in de ogen van de Here, hoewel niet zo goed als zijn voorvader David. In alles volgde hij het goede voorbeeld van zijn vader Joas. 6Ook hij haalde echter de offerplaatsen op de heuvels niet weg, dus bleven de mensen daar hun offers en reukwerk verbranden. 7Zodra hij de macht stevig in handen had, liet hij de moordenaars van zijn vader doden. 8Hun kinderen doodde hij niet, omdat de Here in de wet van Mozes had verboden dat vaders voor hun kinderen moesten sterven of kinderen met hun leven moesten boeten voor de zonden van hun vaders. Ieder is verantwoordelijk voor zijn eigen zonden. 9Eens doodde Amasja tienduizend Edomieten in de zoutvallei. Hij veroverde ook Sela en gaf het de nieuwe naam Jokteël. Zo heet het vandaag de dag nog. 10Op een dag stuurde hij een boodschap naar koning Joas van Israël, de zoon van Joachaz en kleinzoon van Jehu, waarin hij hem uitdaagde zijn leger te mobiliseren en de strijd met hem aan te binden. 11Maar koning Joas liet weten: ‘De distel van de Libanon eiste van de machtige ceder: “Geef uw dochter als vrouw aan mijn zoon.” Maar net op dat moment kwam een wild dier langs dat op de distel stapte en hem de grond in trapte. 12U hebt Edom verslagen en bent daar erg trots op. Ik raad u echter aan tevreden te zijn met uw glorie en thuis te blijven. Waarom vraagt u om moeilijkheden die zowel u als Juda te gronde kunnen richten?’ 13Maar Amasja luisterde niet en daarom mobiliseerde koning Joas van Israël zijn leger. Bij Bet-Semes, een van de steden van Juda, leverden de beide legers slag 14en Juda werd verslagen, waarop het leger naar huis vluchtte. 15Koning Amasja werd gevangengenomen en Joas trok met het Israëlitische leger verder naar Jeruzalem. Daar braken de troepen van Israël de stadsmuur af vanaf de Efraïmpoort tot de Hoekpoort, over een afstand van honderdtachtig meter. 16Koning Joas maakte vele gijzelaars en nam al het goud en zilver uit de tempel en de schatkamer van het paleis mee, ook de gouden vaten. Daarna ging hij terug naar Samaria. 17De rest van de geschiedenis van Joas en zijn oorlog tegen koning Amasja van Juda staan beschreven in de Kronieken van de koningen van Israël. 18Na zijn dood werd Joas bij de andere koningen van Israël in Samaria begraven. Zijn zoon Jerobeam volgde hem op. 19Amasja leefde vijftien jaar langer dan Joas 20en ook de rest van zijn levensbeschrijving is te vinden in de Kronieken van de koningen van Juda. 21Enkele samenzweerders in Jeruzalem probeerden hem te doden en daarom vluchtte hij naar Lachis. Zijn vijanden stuurden echter mannen achter hem aan die hem daar vermoordden. 22Zijn lichaam werd op paarden teruggebracht en begraven op de koninklijke begraafplaats in de Stad van David. 23Toen Amasja dood was, riep het volk van Juda zijn zestienjarige zoon Azarja tot koning uit. 24Na de dood van zijn vader bouwde hij Elat en maakte er een Judese stad van. 25Ondertussen was Jerobeam de Tweede in Samaria tot koning gekroond. Dat gebeurde in het vijftiende regeringsjaar van koning Amasja van Juda. Jerobeam bleef eenenveertig jaar over Israël regeren. 26Maar hij was al net zo goddeloos als Jerobeam de Eerste, de zoon van Nebat, die Israël had aangevoerd bij het zondigen door afgodsbeelden te vereren. 27Jerobeam de Tweede heroverde het gebied van Israël tussen Hamat en de Dode Zee, precies zoals de Here had voorzegd door de profeet Jona uit Gat-Hachefer, de zoon van Amittai. 28Want de Here had de bittere ellende van Israël gezien, er was niemand die haar kon helpen. 29En omdat Hij niet had gezegd dat Hij Israël ten onder zou laten gaan, gebruikte Hij koning Jerobeam de Tweede om het land te bevrijden.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
