2Zo kon David Gat verlaten. Hij vluchtte naar de grot van Adullam, waar zijn broers en andere familieleden hem al snel gezelschap kwamen houden. 3Ook anderen kwamen daarheen, mensen die in moeilijkheden zaten, schulden hadden of gewoon ontevreden waren. Uiteindelijk stond David aan het hoofd van ongeveer vierhonderd man. 4Korte tijd later vertrok David naar Mispe in Moab om de koning van Moab te vragen of zijn ouders daar onder koninklijke bescherming mochten verblijven, totdat hij wist wat God met hem voorhad. 5David bracht hen bij de koning en zij bleven in Moab gedurende de hele periode dat David in de bergvesting woonde. 6Op een dag vertelde de profeet Gad aan David dat hij de bergvesting moest verlaten om terug te keren naar Juda. David deed dat en trok naar het woud van Cheret. 7Saul hoorde algauw waar David en zijn mannen zich hadden verscholen. Hij was op dat moment in Gibea en zat onder een eik met zijn speer in de hand, omringd door zijn officieren. 8‘Luister, mannen van Benjamin,’ riep Saul toen hij het nieuws had gehoord. ‘Heeft ook David u akkers, wijngaarden en hoge rangen in zijn leger aangeboden? 9Daarom snap ik niet dat u tegen mij bent. Want niet een van u heeft mij ooit verteld dat mijn eigen zoon een verbond met David heeft gesloten. U voelt zelfs niet met mij mee. Denk u eens in! Toen nam de Edomiet Doëg, die bij Sauls mannen stond, het woord en zei: ‘Toen ik in Nob was, heb ik David zien praten met de priester Achimelech. Daarop ontbood koning Saul onmiddellijk Achimelech en zijn hele familie en de andere priesters uit Nob. Toen zij aankwamen, zei Saul tegen hem: ‘Luister eens goed naar mij, zoon van Achitub!’ ‘Wat is er aan de hand?’ vroeg de angstige Achimelech. 14‘Waarom hebben u en David tegen mij samengezworen?’ wilde Saul weten. ‘Waarom hebt u hem voedsel en een zwaard gegeven en voor hem met God gepraat? Waarom hebt u hem aangemoedigd tegen mij in opstand te komen en mij hier aan te vallen?’ 15‘Maar koning,’ wierp Achimelech tegen, ‘er is toch zeker niemand onder al uw dienaren die zo trouw is als David? Hij is uw schoonzoon en het hoofd van uw lijfwacht! Wie mag zo vertrouwelijk met u omgaan en geniet zoveel aanzien aan uw hof? 16Dit was toch zeker niet de eerste keer dat ik God voor hem om raad heb gevraagd? Het is niet eerlijk als u mij en mijn familie hiervan beschuldigt, want ik heb nooit iets geweten van enige samenzwering tegen u.’ 17‘U zult sterven, Achimelech, samen met uw hele familie,’ schreeuwde de koning. 18Hij beval zijn lijfwachten: ‘Dood deze priesters, want zij zijn bondgenoten van David. Zij wisten dat hij voor mij op de vlucht was, maar hebben het mij niet verteld!’ De soldaten weigerden echter de priesters van de Here te doden. 19Toen wendde de koning zich tot Doëg en zei: ‘Doet u het maar.’ Doëg liep op hen af en doodde de vijfentachtig priesters, die allemaal de linnen priesterkleding droegen. 20Saul liet ook Nob verwoesten, de stad van de priesters en doodde hun gezinnen: mannen, vrouwen, kinderen en babyʼs en ook alle ossen, ezels en schapen. 21Alleen Abjatar, een van de zonen van Achimelech, wist te ontkomen en vluchtte naar David. 22Toen hij hem vertelde wat Saul had gedaan, 23riep David uit: ‘Ik had het kunnen weten! Toen ik Doëg daar zag, wist ik dat hij het Saul zou vertellen. Het is mijn schuld dat uw hele familie is uitgemoord.

'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
