Op bevel van de koning nam Benaja Simi mee naar buiten en doodde hem. Zo kreeg Salomo zijn koninkrijk steeds beter in de greep. 1Salomo vraagt om wijsheid
2Salomo sloot een verbond met de farao, de koning van Egypte, en trouwde met diens dochter. Hij bracht haar naar Jeruzalem en liet haar zolang in de Stad van David wonen, omdat hij nog niet klaar was met de bouw van zijn paleis, de tempel en de muur rond de stad. 3In die tijd brachten de Israëlieten hun offers nog op altaren in de heuvels, omdat de tempel van de Here nog niet gebouwd was. 4Salomo hield van de Here en volgde de aanwijzingen van zijn vader David op, behalve dat hij wel doorging met het offeren in de heuvels. 5Het belangrijkste altaar in de heuvels stond in Gibeon. De koning ging daarheen en offerde daarop duizend brandoffers! 6Die nacht verscheen de Here in een droom aan Salomo en zei dat hij mocht vragen wat hij maar wilde en dat hem dat ook zou worden gegeven! 7Salomo antwoordde: ‘U was buitengewoon goed voor mijn vader David, omdat hij eerlijk en oprecht was, U trouw bleef en uw geboden gehoorzaamde. En U bent nog steeds goed door hem een zoon te geven die zijn plaats op de troon kon innemen. 8O Here, mijn God, nu hebt U mij koning gemaakt als opvolger van mijn vader David, maar ik voel mij als een klein kind dat niet goed weet wat te doen. 9Ik sta hier te midden van uw eigen uitverkoren volk, dat zo groot is dat er haast te veel mensen zijn om te kunnen tellen! 10Geef mij een verstandig hart, zodat ik uw volk goed kan regeren en ik onderscheid kan maken tussen goed en kwaad. Want wie zou zonder die wijsheid zoʼn groot volk kunnen regeren?’ 11De Here was erg tevreden met deze vraag om wijsheid. 12Daarom zei Hij: ‘Omdat u hebt gevraagd om wijsheid bij het regeren van mijn volk en niet hebt gevraagd om een lang leven of rijkdom voor uzelf of om het verslaan van uw vijanden, 13zal Ik u geven waarom u vroeg. Ik zal u wijzer maken dan ooit iemand voor u is geweest of na u zal zijn! 14En Ik zal u ook de dingen geven waarom u niet vroeg: rijkdom en aanzien. Niemand ter wereld zal tijdens uw leven zo rijk en beroemd zijn als u. 15En als u Mij trouw blijft en mijn wetten en geboden gehoorzaamt, net zoals uw vader David deed, zal Ik u ook een lang leven geven.’ 16Toen werd Salomo wakker en besefte dat de Here tot hem had gesproken in een droom. Hij keerde terug naar Jeruzalem en ging het heiligdom binnen. En toen hij voor de ark van het verbond van de Here stond, bracht hij brandoffers en vredeoffers. Daarna liet hij een feestelijke offermaaltijd klaarmaken voor al zijn dienaren. 17Korte tijd later kwamen twee prostituees bij de koning om hem een meningsverschil voor te leggen. 18 ▼▼ This verse is empty because in this translation its contents have been moved to form part of verse 1.Kong. 3:18.

‘Koning,’ begon de ene, ‘wij tweeën wonen in hetzelfde huis en nog niet zo lang geleden kreeg ik een baby. Toen hij drie dagen oud was, kreeg deze vrouw ook een baby. 20Maar haar kind stierf in de loop van de nacht, doordat zij zich in bed omdraaide en het kind stikte door haar gewicht. 21Zij stond op en pakte mijn zoon bij mij uit bed terwijl ik sliep, legde haar dode kind in mijn armen en nam mijn kind mee naar bed. 22Toen ik ʼs morgens mijn baby wilde voeden, was hij dood. Maar toen het buiten licht werd, zag ik dat het mijn zoon helemaal niet was.’ 23De andere vrouw mengde zich in het gesprek en zei: ‘Het was haar zoon wel! Het levende kind is van mij.’ ‘Nee,’ zei de eerste vrouw, ‘het dode kind is van jou en het levende is van mij.’ En zo ruzieden zij maar door waar de koning bij was. 24Toen nam koning Salomo het woord en zei: ‘Laten we de feiten eens op een rijtje zetten: u zegt allebei dat het levende kind van u is en ieder van u zegt dat het dode kind aan de ander toebehoort. 25Goed, breng mij een zwaard.’ Er werd hem een zwaard gebracht. 26Hij zei: ‘Snijd het levende kind in tweeën en geef iedere vrouw een helft.’ 27De vrouw die werkelijk de moeder van het levende kind was en die veel van haar kind hield, schreeuwde echter: ‘Nee, heer! Geef haar het kind dan maar, dood het niet!’ Maar de andere vrouw zei: ‘Nee, het zal niet van jou en niet van mij zijn, verdeel het maar tussen ons beiden.’ 28En de koning zei: ‘Dood de baby niet. Geef hem aan de vrouw die hem in leven wil laten, want zij is de echte moeder.’

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
