Kerja—dan uang
1 Orang Kristen yang hidup sebagai hamba, harus bekerja keras bagi majikannya dan menghormatinya; jangan sampai orang mengatakan bahwa orang Kristen pekerja yang tidak baik. Janganlah biarkan nama Allah atau ajaran-Nya diejek orang karenanya. 2Jika majikannya orang Kristen, ini bukanlah alasan untuk memperlambat pekerjaan, melainkan ia harus bekerja lebih keras lagi, karena jerih payahnya itu menolong seorang saudara seiman.Ajarkanlah kebenaran-kebenaran ini, Timotius, dan berilah dorongan kepada mereka sekalian untuk mematuhinya. 3Mungkin beberapa orang mengingkarinya, tetapi inilah ajaran yang sehat dan lengkap dari Tuhan Yesus Kristus dan merupakan dasar kehidupan yang saleh. 4Barang siapa mengatakan sesuatu yang berlainan, ia sombong dan tidak tahu apa-apa! Ia memutarbalikkan makna ajaran Kristus dan menimbulkan perdebatan yang berakhir dengan iri hati serta kemarahan, dan ini menimbulkan caci maki, kecurigaan, serta fitnah. 5Orang-orang yang berdebat itu, yang pikirannya diliputi dosa, tidak tahu berkata benar: bagi mereka Berita Kesukaan hanya sekadar alat untuk mendapat uang. Jauhkanlah dirimu dari mereka.
6Sesungguhnya hidup sebagai seorang Kristen membawa manfaat besar. Namun hanya apabila orang puas dengan apa yang dia miliki. 7Bagaimanapun juga, kita tidak membawa uang sedikit pun pada waktu kita datang ke dunia, dan bila kita mati, tidak satu sen pun dapat kita bawa. 8Karena itu, bilamana kita mempunyai cukup makanan dan pakaian, kita harus merasa puas. 9Tetapi orang yang ingin menjadi kaya akan segera melakukan hal-hal yang salah untuk mendapat uang, hal-hal yang merugikan mereka, yang menjadikan mereka berpikiran jahat, dan akhirnya membawa mereka ke neraka. 10Karena cinta akan uang adalah akar segala kejahatan. Bahkan beberapa orang berpaling dari Allah karena cinta akan uang. Akibatnya, mereka mencelakakan diri sendiri.
11Timotius, engkau seorang hamba Allah. Jauhkan dirimu dari segala hal yang jahat ini dan bekerjalah untuk segala yang benar dan baik. Belajarlah memercayai Allah serta mengasihi orang lain, dan bersikap sabar serta lemah lembut. 12Berjuanglah dalam pertarungan yang baik yang termasuk kehidupan setiap orang Kristen. Menangkan hidup yang kekal. Untuk itulah engkau dipanggil Allah dan itulah yang dengan tegas kauakui di hadapan banyak saksi.
13Aku memerintahkan engkau di hadapan Allah yang memberi hidup, dan di hadapan Kristus Yesus yang memberi kesaksian dengan tidak mengenal takut di hadapan Pontius Pilatus, 14supaya engkau melaksanakan segala sesuatu yang diperintahkan-Nya kepadamu, sehingga tidak seorang pun dapat menyalahkan engkau mulai sekarang sampai Tuhan Yesus Kristus datang lagi. 15Karena pada saatnya Kristus akan dinyatakan dari surga oleh satu-satunya Allah Yang Mahakuasa, Raja atas segala raja dan Tuhan atas segala yang dipertuan. 16Dialah satu-satunya yang tidak pernah bisa mati, yang hidup di dalam cahaya yang begitu cemerlang, sehingga tiada seorang pun dapat menghampiri-Nya. Tidak ada mata manusia yang pernah dan tidak akan dapat melihat Dia. Bagi-Nya segala hormat, kuasa, dan pemerintahan untuk selama-lamanya. Amin.
17Katakanlah kepada yang kaya supaya mereka jangan sombong dan jangan menggantungkan diri kepada uang yang akan segera lenyap, melainkan kebanggaan dan kepercayaan mereka hendaknya di dalam Allah yang hidup, yang dengan limpahnya selalu memberikan kepada kita segala sesuatu untuk dinikmati. 18Beritahukan supaya mereka mempergunakan uang mereka demi tujuan baik. Mereka wajib menjadi kaya dalam perbuatan-perbuatan baik dan dengan senang hati memberi kepada orang yang berkekurangan, selalu bersedia membagikan kepada orang lain apa yang diberikan Allah kepada mereka. 19Dengan berbuat demikian, mereka akan menimbun untuk mereka sendiri kekayaan yang sejati di surga—itulah satu-satunya penanaman modal yang aman untuk selama-lamanya!
20Timotius, jangan sampai melalaikan hal-hal yang telah dipercayakan Allah kepadamu. Hindarilah perdebatan yang bodoh dengan orang-orang yang membanggakan “pengetahuan”-nya, tetapi yang justru memperlihatkan kepicikannya. 21Beberapa di antara orang-orang ini telah kehilangan yang terpenting dalam hidup mereka—mereka tidak mengenal Allah. Semoga rahmat Allah tercurah ke atas semua Saudara yang kepadanya surat ini akan dibacakan.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
