1Pan ddeallodd gelynion pobl Jwda a Benjamin fod y rhai ddaeth yn ôl o'r gaethglud wedi dechrau ailadeiladu teml i'r Arglwydd, Duw Israel, 2dyma nhw'n mynd at Serwbabel a'r arweinwyr eraill, a dweud, “Gadewch i ni'ch helpu chi. Dŷn ni wedi bod yn addoli eich Duw chi ac yn aberthu iddo ers i Esar-chadon ▼▼4:2 Esar-chadon, brenin Asyria Roedd yn teyrnasu o 681 i 669 CC Mae'n bosib fod y bobl yma wedi cael eu symud i Israel yn 677 CC, pan goncrodd Esar-chadon Syria.

Mae Cyrus, brenin Persia, wedi gorchymyn i ni wneud hynny.” 4Yna dyma'r bobl leol yn dechrau creu trafferthion i bobl Jwda a gwneud iddyn nhw ddechrau colli plwc. 5Roedden nhw'n breibio swyddogion y llywodraeth i achosi problemau a rhwystro'r gwaith rhag mynd yn ei flaen. dyma nhw'n dod â cyhuddiad arall yn erbyn pobl Jwda a Jerwsalem. 7A wedyn pan oedd Artaxerxes ▼▼4:7 Artaxerxes … Persia Artaxerxes I (oedd yn teyrnasu o 465 i 424 CC).
yn frenin ar Persia, dyma Bishlam, Mithredath, Tafél a'u cydweithwyr, yn ysgrifennu ato fe. Roedd y llythyr wedi ei ysgrifennu yn Aramaeg, ac yna ei gyfieithu. ▼▼4:7ei gyfieithu Mae'r Hebraeg yn ychwanegu'r gair Aramaeg – nodyn golygyddol sy'n dynodi newid yn iaith y llyfr. Mae Esra 4:8—6:18 ac Esra 7:12-26 yn Aramaeg, tra mae gweddill y llyfr yn Hebraeg. Aramaeg oedd iaith weinyddol Ymerodraeth Persia.
8Dyma oedd y llythyr am Jerwsalem yn ei ddweud – wedi ei anfon at y Brenin Artaxerxes gan Rechwm yr uwch-swyddog a Shimshai yr ysgrifennydd: 9“Llythyr oddi wrth Rechwm yr uwch-swyddog, Shimshai yr ysgrifennydd, a'u cydweithwyr – yn farnwyr, arolygwyr, swyddogion, ac ysgrifenyddion. Hefyd pobl Erech, Babilon, a Shwshan (sef yr Elamiaid), 10a pawb arall gafodd eu symud i fyw yn Samaria a threfi Traws-Ewffrates gan y brenin mawr ac enwog, Ashwrbanipal ▼▼4:10 Ashwrbanipal Brenin Asyria o 669 i 633 (neu 627) CC
.” 11(Mae hwn yn gopi o'r llythyr gafodd ei anfon:)“At y Brenin Artaxerxes, oddi wrth dy weision yn Traws-Ewffrates.
12Dylai'r brenin wybod fod yr Iddewon ddaeth aton ni yma oddi wrthoch chi wedi mynd i Jerwsalem, ac maen nhw'n ailadeiladu'r ddinas wrthryfelgar, afiach yna. Maen nhw bron â gorffen y waliau, ac yn trwsio ei sylfeini. 13A dylai'r brenin sylweddoli y bydd ar ei golled os bydd y gwaith yma'n cael ei orffen. Fydd dim mwy o drethi na thollau yn cael eu talu ganddyn nhw wedyn!
14Fel rhai sy'n deyrngar i'r brenin ▼

, fydden ni ddim eisiau i'r brenin gael ei ddifrïo. Roedden ni eisiau iddo wybod am hyn, 15er mwyn iddo orchymyn archwilio cofnodion ei ragflaenwyr. Bydd e'n darganfod wedyn fod Jerwsalem wedi achosi dim byd ond trwbwl i frenhinoedd a thaleithiau. Mae un helynt ar ôl y llall wedi codi o'i mewn o'r dechrau. A dyna'n union pam cafodd y ddinas ei dinistrio!16Felly, dŷn ni eisiau rhybuddio'r brenin, os bydd y ddinas yma'n cael ei hailadeiladu, a'r waliau yn cael eu gorffen, fydd e ddim yn gallu cadw rheolaeth ar y rhan yma o'i deyrnas yn Traws-Ewffrates.”
17A dyma'r brenin yn anfon yr ateb yma: “At Rechwm yr uwch-swyddog, Shimshai yr ysgrifennydd, a'u cydweithwyr yn Samaria a'r rhannau eraill o Traws-Ewffrates:
Cyfarchion! 18Cafodd y llythyr wnaethoch chi ei anfon aton ni ei gyfieithu a'i ddarllen o'm blaen i. 19Felly dyma fi'n gorchymyn edrych i mewn i'r mater, a mae'n wir fod pobl y ddinas yma wedi achosi helynt i frenhinoedd o'r dechrau. 20Mae brenhinoedd pwerus wedi bod yn teyrnasu dros Jerwsalem ac ardal gyfan Traws-Ewffrates, ac wedi bod yn derbyn trethi a thollau. 21Felly dw i am i chi orchymyn fod y gwaith i stopio, ac na ddylai'r ddinas gael ei hailadeiladu nes bydda i wedi dweud fel arall. 22Gwnewch yn siŵr eich bod chi'n gwneud hyn. Dŷn ni ddim eisiau i'r frenhiniaeth fod ar ei cholled.”
23Yn syth ar ôl i lythyr y Brenin Artaxerxes gael ei ddarllen i Rechwm, Shimshai a'u cydweithwyr, dyma nhw'n brysio draw at yr Iddewon yn Jerwsalem. Roedden nhw'n bygwth ymyrraeth filwrol os nad oedd y gwaith yn stopio.

When you click on a word, the detailed lexicon opens with:
'Vocabulary' Bibles link the translation to Greek & Hebrew. So far, only some Bibles have this vocabulary feature. They are shown in the Bible select screen with the letter 'V'.
It is the number of occurrences of a word in the Bible. Click on it to see them all in the selected Bible(s).
This reveals different forms for some words and names. These details are often interesting to scholars, eg the word 'beginning' in Genesis.
